Internship opportunity: Mapping ‘participation’ in radiation protection – Belgian Nuclear Research Centre SCK•CEN

This is an exciting opportunity for a MA student in social sciences / humanities to map and review participatory practices in radiation protection, a subfield in nuclear science and technology. The aims of your research will be to: i) clarify why, when and how stakeholders engage in radiation protection; ii) develop novel approaches to analyzing stakeholder interactions; iii) based on (i) and (ii), draw lessons for participatory engagement for decision makers and other stakeholders. Research methods will comprise document analysis, interviews, and participant observation, among others. Your research findings will directly inform the EU ENGAGE research project (, which seeks to identify and address key difficulties and opportunities for stakeholder engagement in three fields of exposure to ionizing radiation: medical use of ionizing radiation, post-accident exposures, and exposure to indoor radon.

Applications are invited from candidates who hold a first degree in social studies of science or related fields (e.g., science and technology studies, sociology, anthropology, history), or a higher degree or are studying for a higher degree. Candidates are advised that this internship opportunity is intended for a researcher early in their career, and will offer an opportunity to carry out novel research in a stimulating research environment.

Privileges include participation in scientific conferences and publications, financial support for expenses associated with research activities, use of a dormitory in the vicinity of Mol.
